Our Story

The Any Body Can Youth Foundation aims to provide an all-in-one after school program in a safe, inviting environment for youth in underserved areas of San Diego. Our unique concept includes both academic and athletic components.

The ABC Youth Foundation is equipped with a learning center and a gym where youth can take advantage of academic resources and boxing lessons. In addition to our year-round academic and athletic programs, we also offer our Bridging the Gap enrichment program during the summer break.

Our goal is to establish more facilities and share the ABC concept throughout areas across the nation to prevent drug and gang violence among youth.

DONATE NOW

Your donation to ABC will help bring hope and stability to our community. Our foundation has everything in place to change the lives of the youth in south San Diego. We have a board of directors composed of prominent citizens including doctors, lawyers, educators and business leaders. We have a board of education formally recognized partnership with neighboring Golden Hill School. Credentialed teachers and coaches are present in the gym/learning center at least four hours each day after school. Both Golden Hill and King-Chavez school students have shown tremendous interest in participating in our program.

It is our goal to provide the highest quality program to the largest number of youth and for this we need financial support. Please consider contributing to the vision of ABC. There is an ongoing need for up-to-date boxing gear, athletic equipment, and uniforms.  We intend to continue building our library/learning center by filling our bookcases with books, and providing a quiet, comfortable space where our students can study.

You will feel proud to know that by donating to ABC Youth Foundation, not only are you keeping kids safe from gang violence, but you are offering them a positive alternative.

OUR ONGOING PROGRAMS

Help ABC gain traction in the community.

The Mongoose Boxing program is the athletic component to our youth programs. The program offers a positive alternative to the prevalent drug and gang violence in the communities we serve. Boxers maintain focus and determination as they work with their peers and ABC’s coaches. Our head coach, Art Wilson, has been working with Billy Moore for over two decades. Together they have produced boxing champions and, more importantly, well-rounded individuals. Coach Art and other volunteer coaches are here to guide our youth to reach both their athletic and life goals. Whether individuals want to become competitive boxers or are looking for an alternative activity, the ABC Youth Foundation is guaranteed to have something for everybody.

AFTER-SCHOOL LEARNING CENTER

We realize that academics are a major factor in ensuring bright futures for our youth. The purpose of our academic program is to enable students to successfully graduate from high school and pursue higher education.

The Learning Center provides students with a classroom environment where they can study and receive academic assistance. Our library is filled with books for any occasion and for all reading levels. We have books for leisure, as well as textbooks and study guides. Another valuable resource we have available are our laptops. Laptops can be checked out to use as tools for research and assignments. Additionally, tutors are on site four days a week for students who need one-on-one assistance. We also offer guidance to individuals who need to prepare for college (e.g. applications and academic advising) or special testing (e.g. ASVAB, PELLETB and GRE).

“BRIDGING THE GAP” BREAK PROGRAMS

Summer Sea_WorldOur “Bridging the Gap” Summer and Spring Programs have around twenty-five to thirty-five students in grades five through eleven enrolled in our full day, six week session (Summer) or one week session (Spring). The students spend their mornings in academic classes emphasizing reading, math and computer skills. Their afternoons include lessons in art, chess, African drumming, science activities, yoga, sports, and more. On several afternoons, youth have participated in a community clean-up effort in the area immediately around the gym. Thanks to our generous partners, we are able to offer the youth field trips to many venues in San Diego. Dennis Conner sponsored a luncheon at the San Diego Yacht Club and a harbor cruise on his famous “Stars and Stripes”. KUSI TV covered the outing and ran a piece on the news that evening. Each summer we also receive tickets to SeaWorld. The Padres Organization donate tickets as well for us to attend games at Petco Park. Other field trips included a career day and lunch with our partners at SDG&E & Wawanesa and a dinner/theater trip to The Old Globe to see “The Tempest” and a complimentary tour in 2012.  The USCD School of Medicine also hosted ABC for its Research Training Program.

Jamie Stars__Stripes

Through the SDUSD Summer Feeding Program, and the sponsorship of BAME church, the students attending our summer program ate lunch Monday through Thursday free of charge. Thanks to our sponsor, Tod Firotto, they enjoyed a lunch treat of pizza and soda every Friday. The Coca-Cola Company and Ken Ramirez donated $900 worth of products to the program as well. Kids also get to go swimming on Wednesday afternoons at our partnered Jackie Robinson YMCA and had a full swim day at the Border View Family YMCA.

ABC Girls

In April of 2012, ABC had its first Spring Break “Bridging the Gap” Program for one week.  This week continued to provide twenty-five students with a full day program with enrichment activities and field trips as well as free lunch the entire week.  Our youth participated in activities hosted by the National Guard (ROPE courses and leadership and teamwork development), San Diego Water Color Society art lessons, Theater & Acting classes (provided by the Old Globe), Nutrition Lessons, Math and Reading classes as well as field trips to the San Diego Court House, SDG&E and Wawanesa Insurance.  Through its success we will continue to offer this opportunity during the Spring Breaks and Winter Breaks as well.

The break program sessions create tremendous positive changes and growth in the youth who attend. This program allows our youth to maintain their academic levels while offering them enrichment opportunities. We have seen the benefits translated into better academic performance and increased self-esteem during the school year. The intention is to make this “Bridging the Gap” program available to an increased number of students every school break.

COACHES
Coach Arthur Wilson
Arthur Wilson started boxing at the age of eleven at the UpTown Boxing Gym next to the Apollo Theatre in New York.  Trained along side Doug Jones who later fought Muhammad Ali in a 10 round professional fight.  Many watchers thought this was the hardest fight on Ali’s road to the championship.  When he left UpTown Gym he went to train at the Department of Parks center called the Bath House.  The trainer was George Gasket who trained a lot of amateur champions but didn’t want to train professionals because he felt there was a corruption of boxing.  Under his training he was able to train along side several World Champions including Emile Griffith, Benny ‘Kid’ Paret and Dick Tiger.  Arthur entered and won several amateur champions and stopped boxing after George Gasket died.

Over 40 years of training, Arthur had several National Championships and over 50 non advancing tournament championships.  He is one of the leading coaches in San Diego and a Clinician, which is the highest ranking coaching level (Level IV) in San Diego.  He is an Elite Coach for USABoxing San Diego. Arthur was also invited to travel with USABoxing to China, Russia, England, etc.
Coach Bob Boone
Coach Robert “Bob” Boone grew up in Los Angeles, CA and received an AA from Pasadena City College.  He has worked with youth development for the San Diego Unified School District in special education as well as at local church groups.  He learned to box in the US Army where, after he retired, he has brought his skills to the ABC Youth Foundation in 2008.
